CHAPTER 14

“Are you sure about this, Jarmen? You know nothing about this cyb—woman. What about—?” Jon Paul began before biting his tongue.

Jarmen understood the Frenchman’s hesitancy. He didn’t trust 626 either, but if the Draka were reviving their experimental Cyborg Soldier Unit, he needed to know who was in charge and where the lab was located. For that information, he needed the genetically-altered woman.

“I have not lost focus on my quest,” he promised.

Jon Paul shook his head. “I never doubted that. What I am concerned about is having another being on a ship that can only be run by someone like you.”

“I am aware of that. I have taken precautions.”

When he made the decision to bring her back with him, he had immediately set up a series of fail-safes to ensure that 626 could not take over the ship. His focus was on stopping Jane from being murdered, but he also needed to address any new threats that might endanger the Kassisans and the Alliance.

“We will—discreetly, of course—help keep an eye on her as well. Luc has taken her on as his personal mission to ensure that she does nothing bad, but he… we… have our limitations,” Jon Paul added.

“Hey, Jarmen, you need to see this. The bad guys are landing on the moon,” IQ hollered from down the corridor.

Jarmen sent a silent message to the robot. IQ swiveled on his wheel and rolled back toward the bridge. Jon Paul watched IQ’s swift departure with a frown.

“I’ve added an alert to the robots. I want to know if 626 tries to access them,” he said.

Jon Paul’s shoulders relaxed. “I should know better than to worry, eh?”

“Yes. I need to monitor the situation on the moon.”

Jarmen exited the upper-level crew’s lounge and strode down the corridor toward the bridge. He was monitoring the one-sided conversation going on in the infirmary through a comlink. Luc had indeed decided to glue himself to 626.

Jarmen wasn’t sure if it was Luc’s compassionate side, the fact the Frenchman missed Jane, or his need to protect them all from the female cyborg. Whatever the reason, he figured it would keep at least one of his vagabond crew out from under his feet.

His pace slowed as he neared Num. The giant robot was standing in the center of the corridor. He frowned and ran a brief diagnostic scan over the robot’s memory. He pulled back with a hiss when a vivid image of Jane flashed through his mind.

“Jon Paul, run a detailed diagnostic on Num,” he ordered, knowing the man had followed him.

“Oui, I’ll do it now,” Jon Paul said. “Come, my big friend. Let me plug you in. I might even give you a shot or two of oil for your joints.”

“Num like oil,” the robot slowly replied.

He stepped out of the way when Num nearly knocked into him as the robot passed. Jarmen should have requested the diagnostic earlier. Breathing deeply, he entered the bridge. IQ was perched in the captain’s chair. Jarmen resisted the urge to rub the aching spot that was forming between his eyes.
